ART is Arlington
June 1, 2011 -- Riding Arlington Transit -- ART is a great way to start or stay on Arlington’s Car-Free Diet. The ART bus can take you to work, restaurants, shops, parks and more. You can also ride it to connect to Metrorail or Metrobus and get to the entire DC metro region. Even if you’re on the Car-Lite Diet, you can still use ART to run errands, catch a movie, go out to dinner, or get to work a few days a week.
During the month of June we’ll be highlighting just how easy, convenient and affordable riding ART can be. You’ll also learn about online tools that can help make riding the bus easier and how ART is environmentally friendly.
ART is Easy
If you’ve never ridden the bus before, it can be a little daunting at first. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you get to where you need to go:

1) Find the right bus: Chances are there’s an ART bus stop nearby. When you see a stop, note its route number. You can also find all of the ART routes listed on the right hand sidebar of this website. 2) Check the time: To find out when the bus is coming, look at the information posted at the bus stop, get a route schedule at any Commuter Store or click on "schedules" on the left hand sidebar of this website. 3) Get to your stop: All ART stops are marked with a green bus stop flag. Get to your stop five minutes early and stand where the bus operator can see you. 4) Get on board: Check the route name and number before getting on the bus to make sure it’s the right one. 5) Pay the fare: Swipe your SmarTrip card over the target on the fare box to pay. If using cash, try to use the exact amount. The bus driver can’t give change. A one-way ride on ART is $1.50. Seniors, persons with disabilities and teens with a student ID pay $0.75. 6) Exit the bus: A block before your stop, press one of the yellow strips that run vertically along the windows and doors of the bus. This will let the driver know you want to get off at the next stop. Make sure you have all of your belongings with you and exit through the back door of the bus. |
