The National Hurricane Center has just released an updated forecast for the 2011 hurricane season, which shows a slight increase in the number and intensity of tropical storms and hurricanes we can expect to see in the Caribbean and the Atlantic Ocean this year.
The annual hurricane season officially begins June 1 and ends November 30, but August through October are the peak months, so hold onto your hats. If you live anywhere near the Gulf coast or the southeastern Atlantic seaboard, now would be a good time to make sure your hurricane preparedness plans are in place and clearly understood by everyone in your household.
Hurricanes are caused by a combination of warm ocean temperatures and various atmospheric conditions. That's one reason why global warming is often mentioned as a possible contributing factor in the increasingly busy and intense hurricane seasons we've been seeing.
