Fighting for both sides. An 1857 West Point graduate, the Virginian was a second lieutenant inside Fort Sumter when Confederates fired on it. He had earlier voted against surrendering the fort. After returning to New York with the rest of the garrison, he resigned his commission and became a captain of engineers with the Confederacy, later promoted to major.
