I talked about this symposium that was sponsored by California Walnuts in the past and I want to share some tips for reducing cancer risk from Karen Collin, MS, RD, a registered dietitian and nutrition advisor to the American Institute for Cancer Research. Ms. Collins said that 58 percent of the meat eaten by Americans is red meat and about one-quarter is processed meat. She went on to say that reducing red meat consumption to a couple of servings per week and avoiding processed meats can help to reduce your risk of colorectal cancer. She also shared these tips:

    * Increase your intake of plant-based foods (fruits, vegetables, beans, and whole grains)
    * Lose weight if you're overweight or obese
    * No more than one or two alcoholic beverages per day if you choose to drink
    * Increase your physical activity.

Ms. Collins went on to say that making these diet and lifestyle changes will also reduce a woman's risk of breast cancer.
